If you (or your wallet) aren’t quite ready to succumb to the DSLR urge just yet, but yearn for a solid megazoom to bridge the gap between your pocket-friendly P&S and that future money pit you’re sure to eventually end up with, Sony’s DSC-H9 offers an enticing list of options including a 15x optically stabilized zoom lens. Reviewers over at Megapixel were quite pleased with the “comprehensive bundle” that Sony includes in the package, and while the svelte three-inch flip-up LCD monitor, ridiculously long zoom, and “good image quality for printing past the widest angle” were praised, there seemed to be a negative vibe about the whole shebang. Among the lengthy list of digs were complaints that the compression was too strong, noticeable barrel distortion, purple fringing, and pincushion effects marred image quality, and a “convoluted menu system” kept operators on the verge of frustration. As if those weren’t damaging enough, the battery was said to drain faster than other Sony digicams, and the plastic enclosure was dubbed “too slippery” for their preferences. Of course, it’s not unusual to see these megazooms suffer in one area or another while still offering incredible closeups for a relatively low price, but we’d recommend perusing the read link for yourself before pulling the trigger on the H9.

New ReleasesSigma France announced K-mount version of its lightweight large aperture zoom lens 50-150mm F2.8 APO DC EX. This lens is specially designed for APS-C digital SLR cameras and consist of 18 elements in 14 groups with 9 diaphragm blades. Minimum focusing distance is 100cm and filter size is 67mm. Dimensions: Diameter 76.3mm X Length 135.1mm (3.0 inches x 5.3 inches), weight: 770g/27.2 oz.
Pentax version of Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 will be available on July 1, 2007 for about $650.

The lens is not as good as one would think when looking at specifications. Sharpness is very good from f4 above, especially towards the long end (100mm and more). CA can be pretty bad at f2.8.

New ReleasesI have a 15-year old Canon EOS Rebel X SLR Autofucus (AF) 35mm camera that I have had since 1992. It came with a 50mm AF Lens and Flash when I bought it. The camera has served me well. It is still one of the best CANON EOS Rebels ever made because it is dummy proof. Since then I have also bought 28-90mm AF Macro Zoom Lens, 75-300mm AF Macro Zoom Lens, and a Olympus Stylus 300 digital zoom camera. But I admire the new modern digital zoom SLR cameras. I know a lot of the digital SLR cameras are very pricey.
No - but you can use your autofocus Canon lenses on Canon Digital SLRs. Because of the smaller sensor size in the less expensive Canon Digital SLRs, your lenses will act like they have a 1.5 times larger focal length. (For example, your 28mm to 90mm will act like a 42mm to 135mm lenses on a film camera.).
